STRESS, HYPNOSIS, AND THE RELAXATION RESPONSE

Have you ever wondered, what is the big deal about stress?
Why does stress have such a high public profile?
It’s the consequences of stress which are serious, so serious that you could use a variety of metaphors to describe it: a gang of hoodlums, destructive termites, nipping bedbugs, cockroaches, a fire breathing dragon, an inning ending triple play, or a fraternity of nasty boys.
Fortunately, research has shown that you can take action today and decrease the consequences of stress, before it’s too late!
The significant consequences of stress show up wearing a variety of disguises.
| Physical Body | Thoughts and Feelings | Behaviors and Habits |
| Head and back pain High blood pressure Decreased immunity Digestion problems Sleep problems Increased risk of heart attack and stroke |
Restlessness Worrying Irritability Sadness Feeling insecure Lack of focus Hopelessness |
Overeating Under eating Anger Drug or alcohol abuse Increased smoking Social withdrawal Relationship conflicts |
Tragically, chronic stress affects us in many ways.

Stress is serious, it’s also pervasive.
By some estimates, more than 50% of patient visits to physicians are for stress related conditions.
Are you about ready for some good news? #1 Herbert Benson M.D. authored the best seller, The Relaxation Response. In this book he identified “The Relaxation Response” as the stress antidote. Good news, right? It’s also old news! The book was published in 1975. Yet, nearly four decades later stress remains destructive and pervasive. Simply identifying the antidote to stress didn’t kill the beast. The antidote needs to be readily available.
Dr. Benson noted that the relaxation response can be elicited by a variety of techniques including meditation, yoga, autogenic training, progressive relaxation, and hypnosis. With so many ways to elicit the relaxation response, it seems like we’re biologically designed to benefit from the relaxation response.

Dr. Benson identified four components of the relaxation response.
- A quiet environment
- A mental device
- A passive attitude
- A comfortable position
Hypnosis combines all four of these components.
Good news #2 I’m a certified hypnotist. I specialize in consistently leading clients to a beneficial level of hypnosis, where the relaxation response is easily elicited. It gets even better, my clients quickly develop this skill of eliciting the relaxation response by themselves.
Hypnosis is a specific tool. Like any good tool, it allows us to be more effective when we use it.
Farewell to Stress
Perhaps you’re ready to say, “Goodbye and good riddance, au revoir et bon débarras, ¡Que se vayan adiós y buena, paalam at magandang riddance, or nie Wiedersehen,” to the consequences of stress.
Imagine being in the driver’s seat of a brand new car, which will deliver you to a tropical paradise uncontaminated by stress. Your vehicle is hypnosis.
Now, the vehicle requires fuel. The fuel is your time. Dr. Benson recommends setting aside twenty minutes once or twice daily to elicit the relaxation response.
Your stress antidote is also like a savings account, make regular deposits before big withdrawals.
Some people are concerned the hypnotist will covertly control them. Actually, the opposite is true. Because you engage your subconscious mind in specific new ways, you have more control, like being able to diffuse the consequences of stress.
You can reduce the consequences of stress before it’s too late. Wouldn’t it be nice, if three months from now you could proudly look back and realize that you took action to improve your quality of life?
It’s decision time. Has stress anchored you long enough?
Are you determined to re-claim your quality of life?
Are you confident enough to try something new? Good.
