DIABETES, HYPNOSIS, AND THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Are you concerned about the serious
complications of diabetes?
Fortunately, scientists have identified
NEW BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL TECHNIQUES!
You’re probably aware of the many complications of diabetes: heart disease, stroke, eye disease, blood vessel disease, nerve damage, kidney damage, eye damage, foot damage, skin and mouth conditions, osteoporosis, hearing problems, and erectile dysfunction.
According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is a global epidemic. [1]
Perhaps you’ve tried the standard protocol of diet, exercise, and medications and sadly realize this triad doesn’t always provide the desired results. [2],[3]
Then prepare yourself for some good news!
Recently published scientific research has identified effective new ways to positively impact your quality of life!
Determination, Information, and Action
You’re reading this page which probably means that you or someone you love has diabetes. Be determined to benefit from all of the available research.
Imagine staying on the present course for one year, five years, or even ten years.
What’s the likely outcome? Give this question serious consideration. Is this the life you want?
Is this the life you dream about, or is it the beginning of a long, frustrating, and painful decline?
Now imagine a different future. Imagine benefiting from applicable scientific research which has given others a brighter future. Don’t ignore the research, and don’t delay acting upon it. Delay is one reason these complications are storm clouds above you.
Published research reports that there are options beyond the sadly deficient standard protocol.
Google has transformed us, we’re now detectives. The published research is easily available, waiting to be read and acted upon.
Opportunity knocks.
It doesn’t actually open the door.
Investigate the citations at the bottom of this page. Dig into the research. Become informed. In consultation with your physician, decide what new information is relevant, and then take action.
The Standard Treatment Regimen, Does Not Always Yield the Desired Results
Dukehealth.org reported, “The treatment of diabetes has changed little over the past 40 years… Even with a closely followed regimen of treatment … patients still often struggle to keep their blood sugar at a healthy level.” [4]
Family & Community Health concurred, “Current conventional treatments include lifestyle modification, exercise, medication, and surgery. However, these approaches are often impractical or insufficient.”[5]
It’s Not Just the Food
Health.com reports, “There is a myth out there that it’s all about food as to why the blood sugar rises,” says Richard Hellman, MD, former president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. “The truth is that other factors play a role… including stress.”
Richard S. Surwit’s 2004 book, The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution: The Proven Way to Control Your Blood Sugar by Managing Stress, Depression, Anger and Other Emotions, provides a detailed explanation of how emotional states such as stress, depression, and anger can affect blood sugar levels for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Surwit reports, “With each experiment, we became more and more convinced that stress and type 2 diabetes were intricately linked, particularly in people who are genetically prone to the disease.”[6]
Mayoclinic.com also reported that stress is related to higher blood sugar.
Diabetes.org reports that elevated stress can affect blood glucose levels in two ways. First, stressed individuals may not take good care of themselves. They may drink more alcohol, exercise less, not regularly monitor glucose levels or plan good meals. Second, stress hormones may directly affect blood glucose levels.
Surwit recommends progressive muscle relaxation to offset stress. In The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution he wrote, “You can learn progressive muscle relaxation within several weeks with the instructions in this book.”
I want to honor Dr. Surwit for his significant ground-breaking research. However, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a quicker method to effectively achieve the benefits of progressive muscle relaxation?
There is, it’s called hypnosis! Clients typically report, after their first hypnosis session with me, that they’ve already experienced profound relaxation.
Imagine achieving the benefits of profound relaxation within days, not weeks.
There is truth to the phrase, “Out of sight, out of mind.” There is a price to pay for delay. On the other hand, this research is free, and the free hypnosis session is priced right. One of your currencies is time; spend it wisely. Isn’t it time you stopped treating your health like a depreciating asset?
Complicating Emotions
According to Surwit, the three complicating emotions are stress, depression, and anger.
STRESS
Feelings of stress lead to an increase of stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) and raise blood glucose levels in people with diabetes.[7] Additionally, high levels of stress inhibit insulin release.[8]
Adding insult to injury, the diagnosis of diabetes can be stressful enough to aggravate the condition.[9]
Surwit reports in The Mind-Body Diabetes Revolution, “…research into the mind-body connection in diabetes has grown so strong and so convincing over the past twenty years that we can no longer ignore it. Indeed, we now know that you can use the powers of your mind to influence your body in profound ways, including normalizing blood sugar numbers. Applying stress management techniques positively impacts long-term glycemic control for persons with type 2 diabetes.
If you are concerned about the caustic complications of diabetes, then reread the previous paragraph.
There is something simple, yet profound, which you can do to positively impact your quality of life. Use hypnosis for stress reduction! Do this regularly. Invest time in yourself. Your bright future is calling, answer the call with hypnosis.
DEPRESSION
Individuals with depression often have elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol which plays a role in elevating blood sugar. Surwit recommends stress reduction and cognitive behavior therapy.
ANGER
Surwit reports that angry people tend to have insulin resistance and higher blood sugar levels. He recommends stress reduction and cognitive behavior therapy.

Reduce Stress, Effectively Relax with Hypnosis
“All relaxation techniques trigger the relaxation response. Your relaxation response is an antidote to your fight-or-flight response. Lowering levels of stress hormones will help keep the liver from overproducing sugar, allow the pancreas to release insulin in the right amounts and thereby control your blood sugar.”[11]
Hypnosis is more than relaxation. However, it is one of the quickest and most effective relaxation techniques available. Now you know the importance of profound relaxation. Wouldn’t it be nice to quickly enjoy the benefits of relaxation?
Mind-Body Techniques
Hypnosis is a mind-body technique.[12] Diabetes Spectrum reported that, “Mind-body techniques utilize the mind’s capacity to affect the body and its physiological responses, influencing health.”[13]
Other mind-body techniques include healing imagery, visualization, yoga, meditation, and massage. You may have already tried one of these other techniques and been disappointed in the results. If you’re frustrated, don’t give up!
Hypnosis is different from other mind-body techniques in two respects. First, “depth of hypnosis” is important. Second, consistently and intentionally experiencing a beneficial depth of hypnosis is a skill you can quickly master, in days not weeks or months.
In Summary
First, the complications of diabetes are serious.
Second, the standard treatment protocol doesn’t always yield the desired results.
Third, medications can have serious side effects.
Fourth, emotions (stress, depression, and anger) play a role in diabetes.
Fifth, hypnosis can counteract the consequences of these emotions.
